Before You Read, Take a Look at Your Own Habits.
You're tired. Your energy drops halfway through the day. You keep trying to get back into a healthy routine, but something always gets in the way.
What if you've been trying to fix the wrong thing?
Before you read my story, take a few minutes to look at your own daily patterns.
Download your FREE Foundation Check — a simple self-assessment to help you recognize what's happening throughout your day and where to start making changes.
I went into menopause much earlier than I ever expected.
For years, I had questions. I was exhausted. I was gaining a few extra pounds. My body felt different, and I didn't feel like I was getting many answers.
So I just kept going. Life didn't stop. There were things to do and people who needed me, tired or not.
But eventually, I got tired of being tired.
So I did what I've always done: I started asking why. Not obsessing. Not controlling every little thing. Just noticing. And what I noticed changed how I think about weight, energy and cravings after 40.
Weight gain. Feeling tired all the time. The 3 PM crash. Needing coffee just to function. Wanting something sweet every night. Sleeping badly.
If you're over 40, you might be dealing with a few of these at once and wondering when your body stopped cooperating.
Most of us treat them as separate problems, so we go looking for separate fixes. A diet for the weight, more coffee for the tiredness, more discipline for the cravings. Maybe a supplement for energy and a stricter bedtime for sleep. Add more protein, fewer carbs, more steps and less sugar, and pretty soon you're trying to fix six things at once.
But what if they aren't six separate problems?
We focus on the symptom we can see
Weight gets most of the attention because it's the easiest thing to see. The scale moves, your jeans fit differently, and so that becomes the thing to fix first.
But weight gain is rarely the only thing changing. Cravings, energy, sleep and hunger can all shift too, and what happens throughout your day can affect how you feel.
And yes, your body really does change after 40. Hormones shift, sleep can get lighter, and what worked at 30 may not work the same way now. That's real. But your daily habits still matter, and they're one of the places you can start looking more closely.
So instead of starting with "How do I lose weight?", I think a better question after 40 is: "What's happening in my day that might be making me feel this way?"
It's a small shift, but it tends to lead somewhere much more useful.
Look at the whole day
Picture a day like this.
You wake up tired and reach for coffee because you need to get moving. Breakfast is small, rushed or skipped. The morning gets busy, and you don't think about food until lunch is already late.
Then 3 PM hits. Your energy is gone, and you want coffee, something sweet, or both. You push through, and by dinner you're starving and worn out.
Later you finally sit down, and the cravings come back. You stay up later than you meant to, because it's the first time all day that nobody needs anything from you. You sleep badly, wake up exhausted, and do it all again.
Now imagine trying to fix that whole day with "I just need to eat less." It might help with one piece. It doesn't touch the rest.
Before you try to fix everything, find where your pattern starts.
My free Foundation Check takes about five minutes and helps you look at the five daily habits that may be connected to your energy, cravings and evenings.
The craving may have started hours earlier
Something that bothers you at 9 PM may have started at 9 AM.
An evening craving can have a lot to do with how little you ate earlier. An afternoon crash can trace back to your morning. Needing another coffee may be about last night's sleep. And late-night scrolling sometimes has less to do with your phone and more to do with the fact that the evening is the only time that feels like yours.
When these things repeat day after day, they start to look like separate problems. Often they're parts of the same story.
Why "try harder" stops working
If this were only about effort, most women would have solved it years ago.
You probably already know the basics.
You know food matters. You know movement matters. You know sleep matters.
More information isn't always what's missing.
What's often missing is seeing how one part of your day sets up the next.
Once you start seeing the pattern, you can stop treating every symptom like a separate problem and start asking what may be driving it.
Start noticing instead of guessing
That doesn't mean every problem has one simple explanation.
Bodies are complicated. Hormones, sleep, nutrition, stress and medical issues can all play a role. And if something feels new, sudden or severe, it's worth talking with your doctor.
The goal isn't to blame everything on one thing.
It's to start noticing how one part of your day leads to the next.
Those answers can tell you far more than deciding you simply need more willpower.
Try this tonight: before bed, jot down three things. When did you first eat? When did your energy dip lowest? When did cravings hit hardest? Do it for three days, and see what shows up.
Why I built my 8-week program around your day
This is the idea behind the BananaMamaLife 8-week program. It isn't built around a diet, calorie counting or one perfect way to eat. It's built around the day itself: coffee, breakfast, lunch, the afternoon crash, dinner, movement, late nights and mindset.
Not because each one is its own problem, but because they affect each other. A rushed morning shows up in the afternoon. An under-fueled afternoon shows up at night. A late night shows up the next morning. Before long you're stuck in a cycle without knowing where it starts.
And we don't try to fix it all at once. I don't want you changing ten things on Monday, tracking every bite, or feeling like you failed because one day went sideways. We take it one piece at a time: notice what's happening, figure out what might be feeding the next problem, and make one change that fits your real life.
Sometimes you don't need a bigger plan. You need to change the right thing first.
Maybe the weight isn't where you start
If weight loss is your goal, that's a completely valid goal.
But the first step may not be forcing the number on the scale down.
It may be understanding what your days actually look like.
Your energy. Your hunger. Your meals. Your afternoons. Your evenings. Your sleep.
Because once you can see the pattern, you're in a much better position to change it.
That's what BananaMamaLife is about.
Less chasing symptoms.
Less starting over.
More understanding of what's really going on in your day.
